Every day, the American Red Cross sees the heartbreak of people trying to cope with more intense storms, heavier rainfall, higher temperatures, stronger hurricanes, and more devastating wildfires. As more people rely on the Red Cross for help, the need for compassionate volunteers has never been greater. Check out some of our many opportunities to volunteer below. A Local & Virtual Opportunity - Disaster Services

Disaster Services volunteers provide food, shelter, and comfort for families affected by major disasters such as fires, hurricanes, floods, and tornadoes.

Disaster Action Team

As a Disaster Action Team volunteer, you’ll provide emotional support, financial assistance, and information to help families begin the process of recovery after they experience a local disaster such as a home fire or flood. After your initial training, your shifts will include responding to emergencies within 2 hours, night or day, rain or shine, to provide immediate compassion and care. With experience and further training you can take on leadership and response coordination roles to have a wider impact. At the same time, you’ll be developing skills that you may choose to apply to larger-scale disaster response efforts with the Red Cross.

Duty Officer

Duty Officers act as dispatchers for our Disaster Action Team members. They receive calls requesting Red Cross support and then dispatch DAT members and monitor our response to make sure appropriate resources are made available. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone looking to volunteer virtually! 

Sheltering

Make sure families don't face tough times along by supporting shelter efforts. Our sheltering volunteer support the day-to-day activities within a shelter, which may include working in reception, registration, feeding, dormitory, information, or other areas. When the time comes, volunteers are asked to commit to multiple local shifts of 4-12 hours. 

ERV (Emergency Response Vehicle) Drivers

ERV Team volunteers climb into emergency response vehicles and travel to neighborhoods of those in need, providing food, water, and comfort. Red Cross emergency response vehicles have become an iconic image of these disaster relief services. 

Logistics

Help ensure that our teams have have all of the items we need to care for our communities during a disaster, including facilities, vehicles, and supplies. Our logistics team helps acquire, track, and maintain all of our material resources. 

Recovery

Our work doesn't end after a disaster strikes. Our recovery care team works with clients who have been affected by a disaster to ensure they have a recovery plan and their needs are met. 

Preparedness

Teach communities how to plan for emergencies! Preparedness volunteers support our Home Fire Campaign, including conducting in-home smoke alarm installation and fire safety education visits. Instructor/Presenters also deliver adult and youth education programs focused on Disaster Preparedness.

A Local & Virtual Opportunity - Licensed Professionals in Health & Mental Health Field

Nurses have been vital to the work of the American Red Cross since 1888. Today, more than 20,000 of your fellow nurses and other health/mental health professionals are involved in providing disaster response and other leadership roles throughout our organization.

Disaster Health Services

During large disasters, you can use your professional skills as a licensed healthcare provider to deliver hands-on care and education to shelter residents. You can also work alongside our Disaster Action Team to provide assistance to clients who experience local disasters such as home fires and floods, by helping clients replace medications, durable medical equipment, and consumable medical supplies.

Qualified licenses include RN, LPN, LVN, EMT, Paramedic, MD, DO, PA, NP, and APRN. *Retired professionals may also qualify if you have retired in the last 5 years. 

Disaster Mental Health 

Disaster Mental Health volunteers help facilitate long-term recovery for clients impacted by disaster, whether they experienced an individual home fire or a major hurricane. These volunteers also support other disaster responders before, during, and after a disaster reponse using staff mental health strategies.

Currently licensed mental health professionals at minimum must hold a master’s degree and an unencumbered license as a social worker, psychologist, professional counselor, marriage and family therapist, or psychiatrist. Current school psychologists and school counselors at minimum must hold a master’s degree in school psychology or school counseling and an unexpired license issued by a state board of education. Current psychiatric nurses must old a state license as a registered nurse and have a minimum of 2 years of experience working in a psychiatric setting. *Retired professionals may also qualify if you have retired in the last 5 years.

A Local & Virtual Opportunity - Services to Military and Veterans Communities, and International Services

The Red Cross is always ready to support our service members, veterans, their families, caregivers, and survivors in times of need, wherever they are and to reconnect families separated internationally by humanitarian crisis. Working together through our network of volunteers, donors, and partners, we provide round-the-clock global access to highly respected, trusted, innovative services and resources. 

We have both in-person and virtual opportunities to choose from.  

Military and VA Treatment Facilities Support Volunteer

Support our local military bases and VA hospitals in a variety of ways including front desk work, greeting, visiting patients, and more. We are especially looking for pharmacy volunteers at Eglin AFB, Tyndall AFB, and Pensacola NAS, as well as certified Yoga instructors. Both locations require separate security clearances, and military bases also require base access.

VA Compassionate Contact Corps Volunteer

Use your empathetic listening skills to have weekly, virtual conversations with homebound Veterans or inpatients who are seeking to make a connection outside their current environment. Volunteers will be training and matched with veterans for 1:1 socialization. Additional security clearance required. 

Animal Visitation Volunteer

Owners of certified and insured therapy animals and who pass our certification process can provide visits to patients in Medical Treatment Facilities, VA Medical Centers, State Veterans Homes and other approved locations. 

Resiliency Workshop Facilitator

For individuals licensed in behavioral health, you can teach hands-on workshops to service members, veterans, and their families in various community-based settings. 

Military Family Outreach Volunteer

These volunteers help enter military family information into our case management system, contact military families to provide Red Cross preparedness information, ensure that military families are supported when faced with an emergency, and more. This group of volunteers helps military families know that the Red Cross is there for them! 

Restoring Family Links Volunteer

These volunteers conduct interviews with clients to gather details to initiate a search for their loved ones, typically from refugee and migrant communities. This opportunity also includes reviewing case details, conducting home visits, and speaking with key community members to accomplish the mission.

Youth Action Campaign – Team Members and Leaders

This is an opportunity specifically for volunteers between the ages of 13-24. Youth Action Campaign - YAC - volunteers work in teams to raise awareness of and promote the values of International Humanitarian Law in their community. These volunteers have a passion for informing their peers about important global issues and have the chance to develop and showcase leadership, project management, and communications skills.

Youth Action Campaign – Leaders

Youth Action Campaign - YAC - volunteers work in teams to raise awareness of and promote the values of International Humanitarian Law in their community. YAC Leader volunteers are adults who bring their passion for engaging and supporting youth and young adults as they inform youth aged 13-24 about International Humanitarian Law and encourage them to build a peer-to-peer awareness campaign on an IHL topic.
