Key Responsibilities
Prepare with Pedro is a national youth preparedness program offered by Red Cross regions across the country. It provides emergency preparedness education in the form of presentations that range in length from 30 to 60 minutes. This preparedness program addresses local hazards, coping skills, household preparedness steps and home fire safety.
Prepare with Pedro is aimed at children in grades K – 2 (ages 4 to 7).
Youth benefit from a standardized story book and activities. With youth preparedness you will:
- Conduct preparedness presentations given to youth in schools, community settings or virtually
- Successfully complete all training requirements including teach-back sessions
- Ensure all reporting data for each presentation given is collected and given to regional staff in a timely manner
- If appropriate, will hand out and collect materials from students, help with classroom management, grade quizzes, and work with individual students during activities
Travel:
For our Preparedness positions travel to nearby boroughs or counties is required. You do not have to have a drivers license to volunteer in this position.
Volunteers may also be required to pick up materials at our chapter locations, give the presentation at the venue and then return the materials to our chapter offices.
Materials can also be picked up by the volunteer ahead of a presentation.
Qualifications
- Excellent communication skills, including public speaking and experience engaging and presenting virtually
- Dynamic personality that relates well to youth in the target age group
- Comfortable presenting an interactive curriculum to youth in school, in community settings and virtually
- Working knowledge of emergency preparedness, including protective actions for various hazards, or a strong desire to learn about emergency preparedness and protective actions in order to teach them to youth
- Flexible and willingness to teach new ideas and concepts, such as the psychosocial "coping skills"
- Strong organizational skills and ability to follow through with minimum supervision
- Reliable, punctual, good time management skills
Time Commitment
- In-person position
- Weekday daytime availability 7am-2pm Monday through Friday
- Most of the youth presentations occur in the morning.
Minimum of 1 school operation (Three Kindergarten to Second Grade Presentations in a row)
Minimum of 10 hours per week, including travel and material pick up. Be able to commit to one school operation per week

Length of Appointment
1 year commitment, renewable
Commitment of at minimum 10 hours a week for 1 semester minimum (if college student MUST have availability)
Relationships
Works closely with all other Preparedness team members to ensure team goals are achieved.
