This position supports the National Headquarters (NHQ) International Services Development (ISD) team.

 

The Global Disaster Preparedness Center (GDPC) is seeking a volunteer with strong writing and editorial skills to support content development for the PrepareCenter knowledge sharing platform. The Volunteer will contribute to the production of exclusive content on disaster preparedness topics, raising the profile and visibility of GDPC, and enhancing engagement with the practitioner community. The volunteer may also be asked to provide editorial and writing support for other GDPC program areas as needed.

Key Responsibilities

The Content Development & Communications Volunteer will work in collaboration with the Knowledge Management Program Manager at the Global Disaster Preparedness Center (GDPC) to increase engagement on the PrepareCenter platform through the production of exclusive high-quality content. The volunteer will be responsible for managing all aspects of content creation and management, including defining content strategy and editorial plan, researching and sourcing content ideas, writing, producing and disseminating content. Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Support development and implementation of a content plan to increase engagement on the PrepareCenter platform.
  • Monitor trends and innovative initiatives in the area of disaster preparedness taking place within Red Cross and Red Crescent National Societies in the geographic region assigned.
  • Write and edit engaging and informative content, including articles, blog posts, topic pages, and more, about disaster preparedness, hazards, humanitarian technology, conferences, local initiatives, and other topics.
  • Analyze global reports, case studies, and initiatives to provide brief descriptions for the site's resource library.
  • Solicit and curate content ideas from internal and external stakeholders, including Red Cross Red Crescent RCRC National Societies, to ensure a steady flow of high-quality content.
  • Provide editorial expertise and support to producing marketing and communications materials on other aspects of GDPC work.
  • Support content dissemination efforts, including social media and newsletters.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Professional proficiency in English, with strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
  • Experience in communications, content management, content strategy, or editorial roles
  • Strong research and analytical skills and the ability to translate complex ideas for non-technical audiences.
  • Patient and willing to learn from different cultures.
  • Familiarity with disaster preparedness and/or humanitarian sector response
  • Knowledge of best practices in marketing and communications
  • Willingness to comply with current public health and Red Cross policies.
  • Writing samples required as a part of the interview process.

 

Preferred:

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, marketing, or a related field.
  • Self-starter, highly motivated with the ability to work in an independent, coordinated manner.
  • Second language proficiency, particularly Spanish, French or Arabic.

Training

  • Social Media Basics (Recommended)
  • Orientation to Red Cross Values (online)
  • Communication and storyteller training through International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) (online)
  • Learning sessions about innovation, technology and humanitarian services. (online).
  • Emergency and disaster preparedness webinars.

 

Note: Completion of some trainings will be required as part of on-boarding during the first three months.
