This position supports the Global Disaster Preparedness Center (GDPC), an International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) reference center hosted by the International Services Department (ISD) of the American Red Cross. This is a 100% virtual (volunteer-from-home) opportunity. The GDPC supports innovation and learning in disaster preparedness to enhance the international network of Red Cross and Red Crescent (RCRC) national societies disaster management capacities through a service-oriented and demand-driven approach to building community resilience.

Key Responsibilities

Manage GDPC social media accounts (Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn) to engage a broader network of users with GDPC activities and to drive traffic to our PrepareCenter website.

- Develop systems and procedures for evaluating and measuring the impact of information shared through the GDPC social media channels.

- Generate reports of user interaction with GDPC social media.

- Develop graphics including images, photographs, graphs, charts, infographics, and maps, suitable for social media sharing.

- Maintain regular two-way communication with GDPC staff to ensure sharing of programmatic priorities and event-related information.

Qualifications

Required:

Reliable access to resources needed to volunteer 100% virtually

- Enthusiastic about Red Cross mission and programs

- Experience authoring and publishing social media content - Cultural sensitivity to diverse audiences

- Work well both individually and with others

- Ability to identify creative solutions and apply best practices in digital communications to a preparedness practitioner context

- Ability to engage effectively with stakeholders such as RC/RC movement, corporate partners, internal American Red Cross and GDPC teams

- Strong communications background including familiarity with digital communications strategies

 

Preferred:

- Prior international humanitarian experience

- Knowledgeable of disaster preparedness

- Comfortable working with different time zones

Training

Onboarding Training:

- Department overview

- Cultural Competency Series: TikTok, Instagram and other Languages of the Younger Generations (EDGE)

- Sharing the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement on Social Media (IFRC)

- Social Media Strategy (Percipio)

Length of Appointment

One year appointment, contingent on successful completion of onboarding training and orientation to GDPC Team. Renewable annually based on satisfactory performance of position.
