NHQ Communications Spanish Translator / Proofreader

This position supports the National Headquarters (NHQ) Communications (COMM) department. This is a 100% virtual (volunteer-from-home) opportunity. The Translator / Proofreader volunteer will work closely with the Multicultural Communications Director to translate and review written or spoken materials from one language. You must be fluent in writing and reading in both languages and understanding common cultures and phrases in this role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Proofread machine-translated materials and make edits to preserve the original meaning and intent.

  • Translate/proofread internal and external documents upon request and on an on-call basis.

  • Utilize translation software for efficiency and consistency.

  • Adhere to Red Cross translation guidelines and terminology, ensuring completed work follows established standards.

  • Consult with subject matter experts to understand specialized concepts to translate them appropriately.

Required qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in one of the following disciplines: linguistics, translation, interpretation, Spanish philology or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and professional translation certification.
  • Professional, verifiable experience translating from English to Spanish, supported by a translation portfolio or work samples
  • Expert-level fluency in Spanish, with excellent knowledge and mastery of English 
  • Exceptional proofreading, grammar, and writing skills to identify and correct errors in both English and Spanish confidently.
  • Strong computer skills, including advanced knowledge and command of Microsoft Word.
  • Experience with machine translation tools and translation memory systems
  • Must have a phone, computer, and internet connection.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Knowledge in context maintenance, glossary, and terminology creation.
  • Interest in continuing education and language fluency assessments for certification.
