LOCAL - Disaster Services: Community Preparedness Education Program Team Member

This position supports the Regional Disaster Cycle Services department. Save lives and prevent injuries by providing free education to community members by working with paid and volunteer staff and following program guidance.

Key Responsibilities

The Preparedness Division provides appropriate preparedness programming within a community to assist community members to prepare for disasters and other emergencies. 

This position is responsible for the tasks involved to implement the preparedness program including:

  1. Support the annual preparedness goals, Regional Disaster Officer (RDO) objectives, and regional/chapter plan for preparedness programming through participation in meetings, projects, and local preparedness activities
  2. Execute assigned projects and local preparedness activities according to the activities you are trained in: Hands-Only CPR, Ready Rating or Be Red Cross Ready Presentations
  3. Complete tasks such as implementing preparedness activities, meeting with partners to build relationships, conducting inventory, and procuring or receiving necessary preparedness supplies

Time Commitment

IMPORTANT:

We receive requests from schools, senior citizen centers, community groups, faith-based organizations and corporate clients who request presentations mostly during the weekday.

Weekend presentations are rare.

  • In Person Programming: 4-to-6 hours per presentation which may include transportation, preparation, audience participation and follow up.
  • Virtual Programming: 1-to-2 hours including preparation, presentation, Q & A from the audience and follow up.

Must have strong knowledge of, and proficiency, in Audio-Visual technologies such as laptop setups with projector and/or speaker setup. Strong computer skills with knowledge of either Zoom or Microsoft Teams.

DRIVING:

We highly recommend that volunteers become authorized drivers or be able to drive to transport themselves to the various locations where presentations are held.

Volunteers may also be required to pick up materials at our chapter locations, give the presentation at the venue and then return the materials to our chapter offices.

Materials can also be picked up by the volunteer ahead of a presentation.

  • Willingness to comply with Red Cross COVID-19 policies for in-person volunteer activities.
  • Ability to relate effectively with diverse groups and individuals, required
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, required
  • Demonstrated ability to read, understand, and review program guidelines and tools, required
  • Experience or comfort public speaking, required
