This position supports the National Headquarters (NHQ) Communications (COMM) team. This is a 100% virtual (volunteer-from-home) opportunity. Media Reporting Volunteers support the NHQ Media Relations team in monitoring national and local Red Cross U.S. media coverage and maintaining updated media outreach lists. This role is integral in highlighting the work of communicators across the country to leadership by compiling key media clips to include in newsletters and producing monthly reports. Media Reporting Volunteers help to keep track of media relationships and maintain updated outreach lists for national media pitching. This position also supports reputation management by flagging negative stories for the organization.

Key Responsibilities
- Use the media monitoring system Cision/TrendKite to identify key news clips with mentions of the Red Cross to share in organization-wide newsletters.
- Compile a monthly media report with analytics from our media monitoring platform, key top stories of the month, and analysis of media trends for c-suite executives.
- Update media lists in Cision based on recent reporter interactions.
- Flag negative articles for the NHQ Media Team to help maintain the positive reputation of the American Red Cross.
- Optional: Sign up for daytime or after-hours shifts answering the national media line.
Qualifications
Required:
- Previous professional experience working in public relations, journalism, media relations, communications, marketing or media monitoring/analytics
- Strong understanding of the news cycle and good news judgement
- Familiarity with national media outlets
- Eager to learn a new media monitoring platform
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite products, particularly Word, Excel and PowerPoint
- Interest in monitoring media coverage, compiling reports and updating media lists
- Willingness to comply with current public health and Red Cross policies.
Preferred:
- Experience working in a media monitoring platform like Cision, Meltwater or Critical Mention.
- Prior experience with American Red Cross communications or public affairs is a plus, but not required.
Training
- Will provide training in Cision media monitoring and reporter database as part of onboarding.
- Will provide training in selecting top media hits, providing analysis of coverage and identifying negative articles as part of onboarding.

Time Commitment
3-5 hours per week. (Must have at least 30 minutes from 9 am to 5 pm ET per week available during business hours for weekly check in meeting.)
