The Disaster Disability Integration (DDI) Team Member is part of the Regional Client Care Programs team. This steady-state position supports the mission of the American Red Cross by performing DDI program activities for their local chapter and/or region. DDI Team Members provide advocacy, outreach, and accommodation coordination for Red Cross clients with disabilities. The position also maintains working knowledge of DDI standards and helps clients get connected to disability resources to support their disaster recovery.

Key Responsibilities

Disaster Disability Integration Team Member-specific Responsibilities:

  • Receives and responds to referrals from chapter and/or regional activities (e.g., Disaster Action Team, Casework, Disaster Health Services, etc.) to support Red Cross clients who have unmet disaster-related disability needs or are experiencing access barriers to Red Cross services.
  • Conducts outreach to local Red Cross clients who have unmet disaster-related disability needs.
  • Engages in the interactive accommodation process with Red Cross clients with disabilities experiencing access barriers to local chapter and/or regional services; and coordinates reasonable accommodation in accordance with program standards.
  • Maintains working knowledge of disability organizations (e.g. CILs, SILCs, P&As, national disability organizations, etc.) and how they can help disaster-impacted people with disabilities.
  • Assists Red Cross clients with disabilities by connecting them to disability resources.
  • Collaborates with DDI organizations (e.g. CILs, SILCs, P&As, national disability organizations, etc.) to address unmet disaster-related disability needs among Red Cross clients with disabilities.
  • Maintains working knowledge of how to use assistive technology and auxiliary aid replacement resources.
  • Promotes Red Cross Inclusive Preparedness resources to the local disability community.
  • Assists chapter and/or regional activities and programs (e.g. Mass Care, Disaster Action Team, etc.) with proactive planning of DDI standards and best practices during disaster readiness and mobilization activities (e.g. supporting Mass Care on-site shelter surveying, identifying effective communication resources, etc.).
  • Maintains working knowledge of DDI foundational and tactical level doctrine.
  • Engages regularly in chapter, regional, and national DDI training and engagement opportunities.
  • Maintains good communication and collaboration with DDI Chapter/Territory Coordinator and/or DDI Regional Program Lead, supervisor and peers.
  • Demonstrates good interpersonal and conflict resolution skills.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of Red Cross systems and resources.

Qualifications

Disaster Disability Integration Team Member-specific Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:

  • Prior Red Cross or outside training, education and/or experience providing disability-related services.
  • Basic knowledge of disability rights, compliance standards, accessibility best practices, and the Americans with Disabilities Act.
  • Good interpersonal skills (e.g. communication, active listening, kindness and compassion).
  • Demonstrates ability for creative problem-solving.
  • Demonstrates commitment to ongoing learning and development.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Educational background in Social Work, Human Services, Special Education, Rehabilitation Counseling, Disability Law, Disability Studies, Human Services or related field.
  • ADA Certification or other related certifications
  • Lived disability experience with education and/or training in providing disability-related services.

Development Opportunities

DDI Team Members are provided ongoing training about DDI program standards and continuing education topics. DDI Team Members can also receive training to serve in DDI operational-state roles or work towards promotion to DDI Chapter/Territory Coordinator or Regional Program Lead positions.

Length of Appointment

Minimum 1 year commitment, renewable

Time Commitment

Time commitment is 8-12 hours per day during times of disaster response for multiple, consecutive days. (In other words, this person is expected to stand up on disaster operations when their local territory is impacted and potentially provide support for regional events.) Time commitment is flexible and varied during “steady state”.
