NHQ:BIO - Drive Diversity Coordinator

This position supports the National Headquarters (NHQ) Biomedical Services (BIO) team. This is a remote (volunteer-from-home opportunity). Support Closing the Sickle Cell Gap which is an enterprise-wide campaign to triple the number of African American blood donors by the end of December 2024. This national effort will help the American Red Cross eliminate the gap in our ability to meet hospital demand and provide the most compatible units for patients with sickle cell disease. This role will coordinate the mobilization of the Drive Diversity Advocates who will Support red cell collections from Black donors to provide units needed for patients with sickle cell disease.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the Drive Diversity Advocate schedule and communicate regularly with volunteers to fill shifts and create an engaged volunteer team
  • Communicate at least weekly, through phone and email, with volunteers to recruit for shifts
  • Teach volunteers to self-schedule and access Volunteer Connection
  • Discuss special circumstances or changes with assigned volunteers
  • Receive and share feedback from volunteers
  • Perform data entry to ensure accurate volunteer records
  • Explain the Drive Diversity Advocate (DDA) role and process and assist with initial intake and data collection through the process
  • Ensure volunteers have relevant information and that questions are answered appropriately while creating a favorable impression of the Closing the Sickle Cell Gap Initiative
  • Learn and share the Red Cross story, including the mission, vision, and values Model excellent customer service behaviors
  • Make scheduling/reminder/cancellation calls, re-schedule DDA shifts and perform follow up activities as directed



  • Ability to display the utmost professionalism and communication skills
  • Extremely comfortable working with people from diverse communities and backgrounds
  • Willingness to learn technology needed for position: Volunteer Connection Database and scheduling tool
  • Experience and comfort using Microsoft Office Suite, including Teams, Excel and Word
  • Ability to volunteer from home in a remote environment, including reliable access to phone with sufficient minutes
  • Comfort calling and emailing volunteers to encourage them to sign up for blood drive volunteer shifts
  • Prior customer service experience
  • Ability to explain/teach technology to donors and fellow volunteers
  • Ability to regularly commit to schedule and adapt to a change driven culture
