Key Responsibilities

• Visit patients in Medical Treatment Facilities or other approved locations as scheduled by leadership
• Ensure that all baseline requirements are met pertaining to your animals health, group liability insurance (not homeowners), training and certifications
• Be responsible for the behavior and care of your animal
• Follow rules and procedures of the facility being visited to include reporting of actions to leadership


Red Cross Leadership; Military or Community leadership; animal therapy organizations; patients and family members; community


• Orientation to the American Red Cross
• Hospital specific training to include HIPAA
• On the job training

• Raise awareness of Red Cross services to the public
• Meet and interact with new people in different roles

• Enthusiastic about Red Cross programs
• Complete additional security checks required by facilities being visited
• Minimum age of 18 with an animal at least 1 year old and in excellent health
• Animals must be in good standing with a certifying organization such as American Kennel Club, Delta Society or Pet Partners. Records must be available for review
• Owner/handler must meet annual recertification requirements for themselves and the animal
• Able to be sensitive to others and personally work well in stressful situations with a wide variety of people
