*Disaster Action Team Member (Adult)

This position supports the Regional Disaster Cycle Services (DCS) department. Most of the 60,000 emergencies that the Red Cross responds to each year are local, personal disasters like home fires. Disaster Action Teams (DAT) provide emotional support, financial assistance, and information to help families begin the process of recovery. The Disaster Action Team (DAT) Member supports capacity building activities necessary to ensure effective service delivery during a DAT response.

Key Responsibilities

This position is responsible for supporting DAT program readiness within a region

  1. Attends regular team meetings and training as required by the region/territory.
  2. Completes assigned projects and tasks according to the needs of the DAT program, such as:
    1. Preparing vehicles
    2. Preparing response materials
    3. Scheduling / supporting regular team meetings and training
    4. Supporting the onboarding, training and leadership development of DAT volunteers
    5. Providing general administrative support for the DAT program

Time Commitment

Disaster Action Team
  • Calls usually last 1 to 4 hours. Larger incidents may require more time.
  • Typically, Disaster Action Team members "take duty" for a defined period of time. During that time, the member will be "on-call" with other team members. 
  • Team members must be available to respond to a call during the shift. This includes responding to a call during the middle of the night

Development Opportunities

With additional training there are opportunities for individual and leadership development to serve as:

  • DAT Specialist on a DAT response.
  • DAT Team Leader in support of the DAT readiness.
  • DAT Supervisor on a DAT response.

Additional training is available across all service lines to orient volunteer to additional activities and opportunities within the Red Cross.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Able to follow and execute requests received from supervisor with little or no supervision.
  • Able to adapt to change, negotiate compromise, and tolerate ambiguity.
  • Able to build effective relationships with groups and individuals who can help with related DAT program goals
  • Willingness to comply with current public health and Red Cross policies
