*Please note:

Beginning July 1, 2015, the state of Pennsylvania is requiring all employees and volunteers who have direct contact, as defined by the statute, with children under the age of 18, to complete additional background screening to ensure the safety of minors. As a volunteer that may have direct contact with minors, please refer to the Red Cross’s Ethics Policy, Section 4.5 and reporting guidelines, which along with the new state law, identifies you as a mandated reporter for any suspected child abuse.

With the new state requirements, you will be required to complete three additional background clearances in addition to the general background check included in the application process:

  • Report of criminal history from the Pennsylvania State Police (fee covered by Red Cross);
  • Child Abuse History Clearance from the Department of Human Services (Child Abuse) (fee covered); and
  • Fingerprint-based federal criminal history submitted through the Pennsylvania State Police or its authorized agent (FBI). *Exception if you have resided in PA for 10 years and have not committed a disqualifying offense. (fee reimbursed to each volunteer by Red Cross)

After you begin your application and complete the initial steps, detailed information and checklists to complete each of these clearances will be sent to you.

While we understand this second phase of screening may take several weeks to finalize, please note that your volunteer placement with the American Red Cross is contingent upon the successful completion of these three additional clearances required by the State of Pennsylvania.
