What is the Summer Internship Program?
The American Red Cross Summer Internship Program (SIP) is dedicated to fostering talent development and build a robust pipeline of skilled professionals into our volunteer workforce. We strive to provide a dynamic and inclusive learning environment for youth and young adults to feel empowered to grow, learn, and contribute meaningfully to our organization.
Through hands-on experience, mentorship, and exposure to real-world department challenges, we aim to equip interns with the skills, knowledge, and networks necessary to succeed in their future careers (both in professional settings and volunteerism). By investing in the development of emerging talent, our goal is not only to enrich the experiences of our interns in their future academic and professional life, but also strengthen our organization by cultivating a diverse and innovative workforce poised to drive our continued success.
Who can apply?
Individuals ages 13-24 who reside in our region, attend school here, or work here are eligible to apply. Not sure if you qualify? Reach out to YouthNCCR+Intern@redcross.org.
What does the program timeline look like?
The SIP runs from June 15 to August 7. Interns are expected to complete a minimum of 10 hours per week (max. 18 hours) in their role in completing their position duties. As part of the program, interns will also develop a capstone project, which they will present at the SIP Closing banquet. Interns will also be expected to attend professional development workshops focused on preparing them for college and professional life, which take place over the course of the program. Other specific duties are dependent on the intern's position.
How can I strengthen my application? What do you look for in an applicant?
Be honest, and be yourself! We want to understand how your unique interests and talents have formed the person you currently are. There is no right or wrong answer to each prompt, and your experiences don't need to be directly tied to the internship role. We do not require candidates to have previous experience with the American Red Cross, however we do seek for individuals who have a demonstrated interest in our mission and can benefit through their experience in the internship program.
What else should I know about the program?
Following the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and American Red Cross policy, this internship is unpaid - however, interns will earn over 80 hours of volunteer credit during their service in the program and qualify to receive academic credit based on their school's internship requirements. Once in the program, interns are held to a high standard and are expected to complete all their tasks within designated timeframes, extenuating circumstances permitted.
The deadline to submit an application is April 17th, 2026. No applications will be considered after this deadline.
If you have questions or run into issues during the application process, please reach out to YouthNCCR+Intern@redcross.org.
